Gordon Sylvester, 80, passed away at his home in Oroville on July 9, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 26, 1928 in Lewiston, Mont. to Arthur and Zelma Sylvester. He moved with his family to Oroville at age three. Gordon graduated from Oroville High School in 1946, where he enjoyed both sports and music. Following high school, Gordon attended Central Washington University for two years then transferred to Washington State University where he received his degree in Horticulture in 1951. During his years at WSU Gordon was a member of the Acacia Fraternity. This created long-lasting friendships and wonderful memories that were enjoyed at several reunions. Following graduation Gordon attended Boise Links School of Business. Gordon began a career spanning over 50 years in agriculture, first working as a fieldman for Niagara Chemical Company in Wenatchee. He returned to Oroville to help operate the family apple orchard. Gordon married DeeLoris Semprimoznik on Aug. 11, 1956 at the Tonasket Community Church. Together they raised their four children and were blessed with 52 happy years of marriage. Gordon continued his work as an orchardist until three years ago.
He was a charter member of the Oroville Jaycees and a member of Acacia Fraternity, Washington State Horticulture Association, United Methodist Church, WSU Alumni Association and the Okanogan County Historical Society. Gordon took pride in his orchard. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, history, playing tennis, baseball, basketball and spending time with his family. He was very musical, playing the trombone in the college band and in a local dance band in Canada. He also sang for many years in the church choir. He volunteered his time helping coach tennis and basketball.
Gordon took a personal interest in the lives of his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was well respected and often described as a true gentleman. He had integrity, a strong faith in God and was a loyal Cougar fan. Gordon was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed but we will cherish the many special memories that remain in our hearts.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 52 years, DeeLoris at home; daughters: Jodi Lawson and Jina (Jerry) Nelson of Oroville and Lisa Weech of Spokane; a son, John (Anna) Sylvester of Oroville; grandchildren: Taylor and Ryan Weech, Adeline, Isaac and Eliza Sylvester; a brother, Jim (Shirley) Sylvester of Kennewick; and many special nieces and nephews.
