TONASKET – The Tonasket School Board is anticipating more cuts in their budget from the state after a six percent cut was already enacted.

The state recently cut six percent from the K-4 Enhancement dollars, which amounted to $5,370, from Full Day Kindergarten, an amount of $10,751, from Levy Equalization Act funds to total $32,177 and from Highly Capable funds in the amount of $539 for a total of $48,837.

These figures were presented to the board during their regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 27. Along with these figures came an estimate of future cuts the state may make to these same funds. An additional four percent cut to these funds would take $3,581 from K-4 Enhancement, $7,168 from Full Day Kindergarten, $21,451 from LEA and $360 from Highly Capable for a total of $32,560. If these additional cuts are made by the state, they would total $8,951 from K-4, $17,919 from Full Day Kindergarten, $53,628 from LEA and $899 from Highly Capable for a grand total of $81,397.

The board also approved the first reading of Policy 8200: Automated External Defibrillation Program.

“The district has consulted with the Okanogan County Medical Program Director in the development of procedures for the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in emergency situations,” the policy states. “Accordingly, the Board authorizes the district to place AEDs at selected school sites. Schools having an AED on site will have training for the volunteer designated responders in the use of the AEDs according to the guidelines of the American Heart Association, Red Cross, or other nationally approved CPR/AED course. Equipping and training designated employees to use AEDs in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) situations increases the Chain of Survival potential for a victim.”

The board heard from all three district principals who stated the beginning of the school year has gone smoothly so far.

Finally, the board set the dates for their meetings for October, November and December. In October, they’ll be having a work session on the Oct. 11, a regular meeting on Oct. 25 and another work session on the Oct. 27. In November, they’ll be having a work session on the Nov. 8 and a regular meeting on the Nov. 22. In December, they’ll have a regular meeting on the Dec. 13 and a consent agenda meeting on the Dec. 17.

The next regular school board meeting will be on Monday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the district boardroom.
