OROVILLE – Katriona Lidstrand shows once more what a community can do. “Kat,” as she likes to be called, chose adding colorful flowers to the south end of town as her Senior Project.
Lidstrand, who will enter her senior year at Oroville High School in the fall, envisioned the project, talked with Barbara Drummond, Chairperson of the Oroville Streetscape Committee, about her idea and then presented her plan to the city council for approval.
Lindstrand, along with her mother Betta and friend Chris McGlothlin, literally dug into the major project this spring. As hurtles presented themselves, she considered possible solutions.
“The project has been quite a learning process for Kat,” her mother said. “Kat remains enthusiastic and hopes that another senior might continue her efforts in the following years, beautifying more stretches of Highway 97.”
A bank account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank under Kat’s Senior Project, so that interested community members can donate to the project. The expense has greatly exceeded her original estimate, but her mother said she has been in business for 27 years and giving back to the community is her way of saying thanks.
“When Kat came to me to ask what Streetscape thought of the idea, she thought it was such a great idea she polled the Streetscape Committee asking what they thought of donating to the project,” said the chairwoman, adding she received a resounding ‘yes’ vote.
Since the mayor is on Streetscape’s email list, he was the first to reply. He stated that since his business is in the south end of town he would match any funds that the Streetscape Committee donated up to $100. His challenge was accepted and the support for Lidstrand’s beautification project has begun.
Lidstrand plans to attend West Coast University after graduation from Oroville High School and pursue a career in hospitality management.
