OROVILLE – The Oroville Hornets Soccer team, in its first official year in the Caribou Trail League, finished sixth out of twelve teams.

Last year, their first for Oroville High School, the boys played matches wherever they could be had and were not an official part of any league. This year they were accepted as part of the CTL and proved they could play with the A-leaguers.

“We had a great first year in the CTL. We ended up nine and seven for the year and finished sixth out of twelve teams,” said soccer coach Carl Iverson, who was assisted by Laura Kinman with the coaching duties.

“We had some great victories, including wins over Tonasket, Omak (twice) and Entiat…all 3 playoff teams,” he added.

The Hornets had some standouts on their offence, according to Iverson. Among these were Abdelnago Mendosa, with 14 goals; Abel Lozano, with 12; and Modesto Gutierrez, with eight.

“Our midfield was anchored by Bryce Woodruff and we had a skilled defensive unit with David Peters as the anchor and Roberto Ripley and Matt Kelly as his sidekicks. The goalie box belonged to Randy Wise and he had a solid year,” said Iverson.

“I want to thank the Oroville Soccer Youth program and my assistant Laura Kinman for the support in getting this program started. The future looks bright with 22

of 25 players returning,” Iverson said.
