LEAVENWORTH – The Tonasket girls’ basketball team finished a long week of travel with a loss to Cascade after also losing to Lake Roosevelt earlier in the week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Tigers lost an away game to Lake Roosevelt 68-31.
“The game didn’t go well at all,” Stephanie Schertenleib, head coach, said. “We had 30 turnovers and did not play a high level of basketball to say the least. We were not working as a team and when that happens things are bound to fall apart.”
Junior Shelby Olma led the team with nine points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal while senior April Webber had five points, three rebounds and three steals and junior Jayden Hawkins had three points, four rebounds and one steal.
On Saturday, Jan. 16, Tonasket traveled to Cascade where they lost 55-32.
“The first half of basketball we played well as a team,” Schertenleib said. “They all hustled hard and encouraged one another. We really played at a high level because Cascade is a very quick team with a lot of talent. The second half we had too many turnovers and failed to get back on transition so they got too many easy baskets and that is really what took us out of the game.”
Webber led the team with 12 points, five rebounds and one steal while Hawkins had four points and eight rebounds, Olma had eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and junior Jerian Ashley had four points and 11 rebounds.
“Overall, the team shot seven for 11 from the line, which is the best they have shot this year,” Schertenleib said. “We have really been working on the fundamentals this past week and the team showed improvement on this last game. As long as they stay positive and work together they will continue to get better. I was really pleased to see how they played in the last game.”
As of press time, the Tigers (0-6, 1-12) had not yet played away against Omak on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Their next game is Friday, Jan. 22 in Brewster at 6 p.m.
