TONASKET – In one week, the Tonasket wrestling team lost a close match to Cashmere before taking down the ninth-raked Lake Roosevelt Raiders.
On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Tigers lost at home to Cashmere 37-32.
“We did real well against Cashmere,” Dave Mitchell, head coach, said. “They’re the number one team in our league and we only lost by a few points.”
At 103 pounds, sophomore Jared Stedtfeld won by forfeit as did sophomore Ryker Marchand at 112 pounds. At 152 pounds, junior Dustin Silverthorn won by decision 16-4 while at 160 pounds, senior Andrew Grillo won by forfeit. Junior Keegan McCormick won by decision 14-3 at 171 pounds while junior Brandon Hudson won by a pin at 215 pounds.
On Thursday, Jan. 14, the then 11th-ranked Tigers beat the Lake Roosevelt Raiders 43-33 at home.
“Lake Roosevelt has a pretty good team this year and we ended up winning,” Mitchell said. “Before the match, in my mind, it came down to three weight classes: 112, 119 and 189 and I figured we needed to win at least two of those. At 112 pounds, Ryker Marchand won by a pin and at 189 pounds Corey McCrarey won by decision 12-7.”
Stedtfeld won by forfeit again at 103 pounds while junior Peter Williams won by decision 10-2 at 140 pounds. Winning by pins were junior Lee Leavell at 145 pounds, Grillo at 160 pounds, McCormick at 171 pounds and Hudson at 215 pounds.
“One of the fun things about the Cashmere and Lake Roosevelt matches was we had a big crowd that was loud and fun,” Mitchell said.
The Tigers next wrestle away against Okanogan on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. and at the Dream Duals Tournament at East Valley High School on Saturday, Jan. 23.
