CASHMERE – Three Tonasket track athletes qualified to compete at the state track meet at the District Six 1A Championship on Friday, May 21 in Cashmere.
Sophomore Damon Halvorsen qualified for state in the 1600 and 3200 meter races while sophomore Jake Hickman also qualified in the 1600 and junior Jessica Spear qualified in the women’s 1600 meter race.
“In the boys’ 1600, Halvorsen led from the start,” Bob Thornton, head coach, said. “After three laps he was on pace to run 4:44 and led by 80 yards so I held him back the last lap to save it for the 3200. So he won in 4:50. Hickman held on to place second to qualify for state as well in 4:55. In the girls’ 1600, Megan Thornton (Omak) led from the start to win in 5:42. We were holding back the first two laps to try and run them down the last two laps. After three laps, Spear was in fourth and Kyndra Dellinger was in fifth, a good 50 yards behind second. With 300 to go, I told them they had to go. Spear got a fire in her eyes and took off, she soon caught third and in the middle of the last turn she caught second and never hesitated but blew by her to finish second in 5:46. She ran her last lap in 71 seconds. It was an amazing finish to watch. Dellinger finished fourth in 6:02.”
Thornton said Halvorsen easily won the 3200 meter race in 10:45. Senior Spencer Podkranic, Thornton said, ran a great race in the 800 meter race but missed qualifying for state when he finished in third.
“The boys’ 100 was an amazing race, though John Stedtfeld finished fifth, he was literally inches from qualifying for state, six-hundredths of a second, less than a blink of an eye,” Thornton said.
