KITTITAS – On Friday May 21, the Oroville Track Team traveled to Kittitas for the District Meet and the Lady Hornets returned with the championship.

With all individual running events over and only four events remaining – discus, shot put, 1600 relay and javelin – the Oroville Ladies held a slim 104-102 lead over Kittitas.

“In a classic fashion Kelsey Hughes then came from behind with a personal record and monster throw over the Kittitas thrower to win the discus,” said Hornet Coach Harold Jensen. “Kelsey then followed that with a PR and a win in the shot put.”

In the last running event the 1600 relay and with Oroville seeded third, Rachel Peters, Naomi Peters and Austianna Quick combined to give freshman Lisa Hartvig a lead. She then held off Kittitas in a photo finish to win the relay by 1/100 of a second. Now down to the last event under dark, cold and windy conditions, Kayla McKinney, Hughes and Katie Teitje dominated the javelin finishing first, second and fifth to seal and win the District Team Championship with 154 points over Kittitas with 120 points.

Bridgeport finished third with 117 points, followed by Entiat, 68; Liberty Bell, 48; Manson, 43; Waterville, 5 and Soap Lake, zero.

“It was a story book ending to the entire day. Rachel Peters came from behind to win the 100 hurdles. Austianna Quick came from behind to win the open 400. Callie Barker was a miss behind in the pole vault and won and Catie Arrigoni was in a championship jump off in the high jump,” Jensen said.

Earlier Rachel Peters also won the triple jump and McKinney finished fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100. Quick finished fourth in the high jump and Arrigoni was also third in the 1600 and fourth in the 800. Lisa Hartvig was third in the high jump, fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 1600. Madison Hatch was fourth in the Pole Vault. Naomi Peters was fifth in the long jump and fifth in the high jump. Callie Barker was fourth in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles. Freshman Jada Russo placed sixth in the 400. In the 800 relay the Oroville girls were fourth with Barker, Naomi Peters, Quick and McKinney and in the 400 relay they were sixth with Fernanda Perez, Russo, Teitje and Hatch.

For the boys, Blaine Wagner was second in the 110 high hurdles and was fourth in the 300 hurdles. Anthony Egerton was fourth in the 400. Preston Iverson was fifth in the javelin and Nathan Haney was sixth in the high jump. The 400 relay team of Wagner, Egerton, Rich Milholland and Iverson finished in sixth place.

The Kittitas boys won the district with 161 pts, followed by Soap Lake with 79, Entiat, 73; Liberty Bell, 58; Waterville, 54; Bridgeport, 43; Manson, 32 and Oroville, 20.

“This will always be a very memorable day for our three senior girls who were all individual District Champions and won the team Championship.” Coach Jensen said.

This Thursday, May 27, Hughes, Barker, Naomi Peters, Quick, Arrigoni, Hartvig, Rachel Peters and Blaine Wagner move on to the State Track and Field Championship Meet in Cheney.

“Kayla McKinney opted out of the State Track Meet to participate in the State Fastpitch Softball Championships in Yakima. Go Hornets!” said Jensen.
